$15K Wedding Budget Breakdown: Where Every Dollar Goes
By Altar & Agenda · Updated
A $15,000 wedding is well below the national average, but it isn't unusual. In The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study (10,474 US couples married in 2025), the median wedding cost $24,000 and about a quarter of couples spent $12,000 or less. Couples whose budgets were in the $0 to $15,000 range spent $8,900 on average. So $15,000 puts you in good company, with a little more room than many.
What $15,000 can't do is everything at average prices for an average-sized crowd. This guide splits $15,000 across every category, shows how many guests it realistically covers, and lists the trade-offs that make the biggest difference.

The $15,000 wedding budget breakdown
Here's our suggested starting split (the "Traditional reception" preset in our free wedding budget calculator) applied to $15,000. It's a starting point, not an industry standard; move money toward whatever matters most to you.
| Category | % of budget | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Venue and rentals | 27% | $4,050 |
| Catering, bar and cake | 22% | $3,300 |
| Photography and video | 11% | $1,650 |
| Flowers and décor | 8% | $1,200 |
| Attire and beauty | 7% | $1,050 |
| Music and entertainment | 6% | $900 |
| Planner or coordinator | 4% | $600 |
| Rings, officiant and license | 3% | $450 |
| Stationery and postage | 2% | $300 |
| Transportation | 2% | $300 |
| Favors and gifts | 2% | $300 |
| Buffer | 6% | $900 |
| Total | 100% | $15,000 |
Keep the buffer. Tips, service charges, taxes and forgotten items appear in almost every budget, and The Knot recommends reserving about 5% as a "just in case" fund.
How many guests does $15,000 cover?
Guest count is the lever that decides whether this budget feels comfortable or tight. Two ways to estimate it, both using The Knot's 2025 averages:
- By total cost per guest. Couples spent an average of $292 per guest. At that rate, $15,000 covers about 51 guests ($15,000 ÷ $292).
- By catering alone. Catering averaged $80 per person. The $3,300 catering line above feeds about 41 guests at that average, before the bar and cake.
For comparison, weddings with 1 to 50 guests averaged $17,100 in the same study. That means a 50-person wedding at average prices runs slightly over $15,000, and a 100-person wedding at $15,000 means spending well below average in most categories. Both are possible. You just need to choose on purpose.

What average vendor prices look like next to $15,000
These are the national averages from The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study, next to the matching line in the $15,000 split:
| Vendor | 2025 US average | In the $15K split |
|---|---|---|
| Reception venue | $12,900 | $4,050 (venue and rentals) |
| Photographer | $3,000 | $1,650 (photo and video) |
| Florist | $2,800 | $1,200 (flowers and décor) |
| Wedding dress | $2,100 | $1,050 (attire and beauty) |
| Event rentals | $2,000 | Included in venue and rentals |
| DJ | $1,800 | $900 (music) |
| Cake | $530 | Included in catering |
| Hair and makeup | $300 | Included in attire and beauty |
The gap is biggest for the venue. That's why couples on smaller budgets so often skip the traditional venue entirely: The Knot found that couples spending under $12,000 tend to choose non-traditional venues like parks or a family home, rely on DIY décor (44%) and ask a friend to officiate (67%).
7 trade-offs that stretch a $15K budget
- Cut the guest list first. Catering, bar, cake, rentals, stationery and favors all grow with every guest. Removing 10 guests at the $292 average saves more than almost any décor decision.
- Choose a venue that includes things. A restaurant private room or a venue with in-house tables, chairs and catering can replace three separate lines.
- Rethink the location. A park pavilion, community hall or family property can cost a fraction of a traditional venue. Our backyard wedding checklist covers what a venue normally handles for you.
- Book photography for fewer hours. Coverage for the ceremony, portraits and the first part of the reception costs less than a full day.
- Serve a buffet, brunch or lunch. The Knot found 60% of 2025 receptions had a buffet or self-serve stations, so it's a normal choice, not a compromise.
- Limit the bar. Beer, wine and one signature drink usually costs less than a full open bar.
- Use a playlist plus a hired sound system if live music or a DJ doesn't fit.
Pick the two or three changes that matter least to you and keep the parts you care about.
How to set up your $15K budget
- Agree on the total with anyone contributing. Our guide to how to split wedding costs between families covers that conversation.
- Choose your top three priorities and move percentage points toward them.
- Put the split into a spreadsheet with columns for the budgeted amount, quotes and what you've paid. Our wedding budget spreadsheet guide shows the formulas, or use our free Wedding Budget Starter.
- Update it after every quote. If a vendor comes in over budget, take the difference from a lower-priority category straight away rather than from the buffer.
Frequently asked questions
Is $15,000 enough for a wedding?
Yes, for many couples. The median 2025 wedding cost $24,000 and about a quarter of couples spent $12,000 or less (The Knot). At a $15,000 budget the main constraint is guest count: at the $292-per-guest average, $15,000 covers about 50 guests.
How many guests can I invite with a $15,000 budget?
About 50 at average costs. With a simpler meal, a budget venue and fewer paid vendors you can host more; plenty of couples on smaller budgets host 75 to 100 guests at a park, family home or community space.
What should I spend the most on with a $15K budget?
Venue and food together usually take around half. After that, spend on what you'll remember. Many couples choose photography, because the photos outlast the day.
How much buffer should a $15,000 wedding budget have?
At least 5% ($750), and 6 to 10% if you're planning in under a year. The buffer covers tips, service charges, taxes and the small costs that never appear in quotes.
